UKIP want our waters back

Our fishing industry has been decimated by the EU since they made a gift of our fishing waters a condition of joining the “Common Market”

Norway which applied at the same time withdrew its application because it wasn’t prepared to lose its fishing waters. We were not so sensible! Today Norway with a population of only 5 million has a fishing fleet almost twice the size of ours.

Even when the EU allocates us a quota to catch, foreign vessels can take our quota if the vessel fishes under a British flag with a crew over 50% British.

The Dutch vessel Cornelis Vrolijk, fishing out of Hull takes 23% of our quota of mackerel and herring and lands the catch in Ijmuiden where the catch is boxed and exported around the world.

We are a net importer of fish (at a cost of £1.3billion) when our quotas are being taken from our waters by other European countries.

Dutch controlled vessels fishing British quotas boast a turnover of £48million and only 1% of their catch is landed in Britain.

Our governments have failed and deceived the British public over its fishing waters since Ted Heath gave away our waters in 1973.

Apart from 9,000 jobs lost by fishermen, there were 88,000 more jobs lost in dependent industries and the Common Fisheries Policy costs the British public an estimated £4.7billion per year.
